Why Are They Called Mary Jane Shoes?
The name “Mary Jane” originated in the early 20th century from the Buster Brown comic strip by Richard Felton Outcault (1902). The comic’s characters, Buster Brown and his companion Mary Jane, wore the iconic strapped shoes. The Brown Shoe Company capitalised on their popularity, making the style synonymous with youthful footwear.
