1930s Shoes That Perfectly Complement a 1960s-Inspired Look

1930s Shoes That Perfectly Complement a 1960s-Inspired Look

1930s Meets 1960s: A Retro Style Match Made in Heaven

While the fashion of the 1930s and 1960s each has its own distinct character, the two eras share design elements that make them surprisingly compatible – especially for anyone curating a retro-inspired wardrobe.

We’re often asked which of our shoes work well with a 1960s look. While our collection doesn’t currently feature designs specifically from the '60s (watch this space!), many of our 1920s and 1930s styles pair beautifully with a 1960s aesthetic. Fashion has a habit of coming full circle, and the timeless detailing found in 1930s shoes fits effortlessly with outfits inspired by the 1960s.

The Elegance of Clean Lines and Comfortable Heels

So why do 1930s shoes work so well with 1960s fashion? Both decades emphasised sleek, geometric lines. In the 1930s, this came through in tailored dresses and suits; by the 1960s, it emerged in the form of A-line dresses, mod-inspired prints and sharp tailoring. The refined, streamlined shapes of 1930s footwear blend naturally with these silhouettes.

Another shared feature is the sensible heel. Both eras favoured lower or mid-height heels – stylish yet comfortable, whether for dancing or daily wear. Many of our 1930s designs, with their broad and stable heels, are ideal for those channeling a 1960s look that leans towards practicality without compromising on style.

Art Deco details from the 1930s also harmonise well with the bold shapes of the 1960s. Think subtle cut-outs, metallic finishes, and interesting shapes – all found in our 1930s styles – echoing the clean, graphic appeal of early 1960s fashion.

Three Vintage Shoe Styles That Effortlessly Blend 1930s Elegance with 1960s Flair

Here are three standout shoes from our collection that marry the craftsmanship of the 1930s with the fun, fresh feel of the 1960s:

The Marlene Shoe

Originally designed as a 1930s evening sandal, the Marlene features a soft metallic finish, delicate cut-outs, and a broad, low heel – all of which pair beautifully with a 1960s mod dress and bold accessories.

Pictured here, our gold Marlene evening sandals are styled with an original fuchsia 1960s dress and vintage accessories from our shop, Vintage Divine.

The Helen Shoe

A timeless evening shoe inspired by the 1920s–1930s, the Helen features metallic colours, a T-strap, cut-outs and a graceful Spanish heel – all design touches that wouldn't have looked out of place on 1960s icons like Twiggy.

Shown here in silver, the Helen sandals are paired with an original 1960s chiffon dress, complete with a delicate ribbon tie at the chest and a classic boat neckline. The look is finished with matching silver accessories, also from Vintage Divine.

The Ruby Shoe

For a more casual option, the Ruby – originally a 1920s Mary Jane – offers a flat heel and rounded toe, creating a simple, timeless style that slots perfectly into a 1960s-inspired everyday wardrobe. Available in a range of colours, it pairs wonderfully with the bold patterns and bright tones of 1960s mod dresses.

Shown here in cream white, the Ruby is styled with a genuine 1960s everyday dress featuring short sleeves, a clean round neckline, and a vibrant red and cream pattern. The look is completed with bright red tights, adding a fun mod pop that makes the shoes stand out. Styling from our May fashion show.
